About FaceTwin
FaceTwin is a small independent product that turns one selfie into three answers: who you look like, how your facial proportions measure up, and what you would look like as a caricature. We built it because the existing tools either upload your photo to a server, hide their scoring, or lock results behind subscriptions. FaceTwin computes the free results on your own device and explains every number.
How the lookalike matching works
A face-recognition network (face-api, MIT licence) converts your face into a 128-dimension descriptor in your browser. We pre-computed the same descriptor for 2,333 public figures from freely licensed Wikimedia Commons portraits (Creative Commons and public domain; Wikidata people with Wikipedia articles in 45+ languages, born 1945 or later). Matching is a nearest-neighbour search by Euclidean distance; similarity = 100 − (distance − 0.40) × 120, capped between 50% and 98%. The shared-trait sentence compares six measured traits (face shape, eye tilt, brow arch, jaw, lips, eye spacing). We store only descriptors, names and photo credits — never the photos.
How the six insights are calculated
- Symmetry — mean mirror distance of 26 landmark pairs across the midline, relative to the inter-eye distance.
- Golden ratio — closeness of face length/width and nose-to-chin/lips-to-chin to 1.618.
- Facial thirds — brow-to-nose vs nose-to-chin height.
- Canthal tilt — angle from inner to outer eye corner after levelling the head (positive ≥ 5°, negative < 1°).
- Jaw angle — mean gonial angle (defined < 141°, soft > 150°).
- Face shape — oval, round, square, heart, oblong or diamond from length/width, jaw/cheekbone and brow/cheekbone ratios.
The 1–10 score weights symmetry 30%, golden ratio 20%, thirds 20%, tilt 15% and jaw 15%, and is scaled against the spread measured on frontal faces in our index. See the aggregate numbers in our face shape statistics.
AI portraits and reports
Paid features use image and language models through OpenRouter (currently Google Gemini models). They run only after Google sign-in and a separate upload consent; the photo is used once, deleted immediately and never used for training. Results are deleted after 7 days.
What FaceTwin is not
It is not identity recognition, not a medical or cosmetic assessment and not a measure of anyone’s worth. It is for adults analysing their own photo. We never generate images of celebrities and we remove people from the index on request.
