Hairstyles for square faces: soften the angles or own them

A square face has a strong, wide jaw and a defined angle at the corners. Confirm your shape with a selfie above, then choose a cut below that softens those angles — or one that sharpens them on purpose.

What hairstyles suit a square face?

Square faces have a broad, angular jaw nearly as wide as the cheekbones and a forehead of similar width. Cuts that suit them either soften those lines or lean into them with intent. Softening options include soft waves, layers that start around the cheekbones, a side-swept fringe and a lob that ends below the jaw. For men, a textured crop with some length on top, a side part with a soft taper, or a short, slightly messy fringe keep the jaw strong without making the head look boxy. Blunt, jaw-length cuts and very flat, center-parted hair simply need an adjustment, not a ban. Our detector labels a face square only when the jaw is at least 0.833 times the cheekbone width and the jaw angle is 145° or sharper; in our reference set of 1,196 faces, 8.4% met that bar — 11.3% of men and 4.8% of women.

  • Goal: soften or deliberately frame the jaw

First, confirm your face is square

A square face is about as wide at the jaw as it is at the cheekbones, the forehead is similar in width, and the jaw corners turn at a clear angle rather than curving. The face is usually only moderately longer than it is wide. Many people with a defined jaw assume they are square when they are really an oval with a strong chin, so it is worth checking.

The detector above measures your jaw width against your cheekbone width and the angle at the corners of your jaw. Both have to pass: a jaw at least 0.833 times as wide as the cheekbones and an average jaw angle of 145° or less (the median in our reference set is 146°). A wide jaw with soft corners is usually labeled round instead. If your face is also clearly long, the result may be oblong; the advice here still applies to the jaw.

Some faces are wider at the jaw than at the brow — a triangle or pear tendency. Our detector has no separate triangle class; it reports those faces as their nearest shape, often square or round, and shows the jaw and brow ratios so you can see it. In our reference set, 9.9% of faces had a jaw at least 6% wider than the brow line (16.4% of men, 2% of women). If that is you, favor cuts with width at the temples.

Cuts to approach with care — and how to adapt them

A strong jaw is a feature many people would love to have, so none of these are mistakes — they just need deliberate styling:

  • Blunt bob that ends at the jaw: the straight line sits on the widest corner. Go longer, add soft layers at the ends, or angle the front.
  • Straight, heavy fringe: it adds another horizontal. Choose a side-swept or curtain fringe, or texture the edge.
  • Flat, sleek center part: it can make the face look boxier. A side part or a bit of root lift fixes it.
  • Very short buzz with sharp edges: it exposes every angle. If you want it, it can look striking — just keep the hairline natural instead of squared off.
  • Volume at jaw level: big curls ending right at the jaw add width. Let curls fall past the jaw or keep the volume higher.

Square-face haircuts by hair texture and length

Natural texture is an advantage here, because curves soften angles on their own.

By texture

  • Straight: add soft layers, a side part and some bend at the ends with a round brush; avoid one blunt line at the jaw.
  • Wavy: let waves start at the cheekbones. A shag or layered lob is easy to wear and naturally softening.
  • Curly: curls that fall past the jaw frame it beautifully; ask for a dry cut so the shape is rounded, not triangular.
  • Coily: a rounded or tapered shape with height on top, twist-outs, or a defined short crop all suit; avoid a wide, flat-topped outline at jaw level.

By length

Short: piece-y pixies and textured crops with soft edges. Medium: a lob or shag that ends below the jaw, with layers around the cheeks. Long: long layers, loose waves or a side part give the most softening.

Men’s haircuts and beard shaping for square faces

Square faces are more common among men in our reference set, and a strong jaw is often seen as an asset. You can frame it rather than hide it: keep some texture and length on top, avoid sharp, boxy edges at the temples, and choose a soft taper rather than a very high, harsh fade. A textured crop, a messy quiff, a side part or medium swept-back hair all work.

For beards, stubble or a short, evenly trimmed beard follows the jaw without adding bulk. A slightly rounded chin softens the corners; a very square, boxed beard exaggerates them, which is fine if that is the look you want. Keep the cheek line natural and the sides shorter than the chin.

Fringe, parting, styling — and what to tell your stylist

Side parts and side-swept or curtain fringes are your easiest wins because they replace horizontal lines with diagonal and curved ones. When styling, use a round brush or a light wave to bend the ends, and place volume around the cheekbones rather than at the jaw. For glasses, round and oval frames, rimless styles and browlines balance the jaw.

A short script for your stylist

“My face is square — my jaw is almost as wide as my cheekbones with defined corners. I’d like to soften that: layers or texture around the cheekbones, ends that fall below the jaw, and no hard line right at the jaw. A side-swept fringe is fine. My hair is [texture] and I style it for about [minutes] a day.” Show your FaceTwin jaw angle and a reference photo you like.

Frequently asked questions

What haircut is best for a square face?

Soft waves or layers that start at the cheekbones and end below the jaw, with a side-swept fringe. For men, a textured crop or side part with a soft taper.

Should square faces avoid bobs?

No — just avoid a blunt bob ending exactly at the jaw. A longer or angled bob with soft ends works well.

Do bangs suit square faces?

Yes, especially side-swept and curtain bangs. A heavy straight fringe adds a horizontal line, so soften or texture its edge.

How can I tell if my face is square or round?

Both have a wide jaw, but a square jaw turns at a clear angle while a round jaw curves. The detector measures your jaw angle; 145° or less with a wide jaw reads square.

What beard suits a square face?

Stubble or a short, even beard that follows the jaw, with a slightly rounded chin if you want to soften the corners.

Is my photo uploaded?

Not for local lookalikes or face analysis: the model runs in your browser, so your selfie, landmarks and descriptor stay on your device. What glasses suit a square face?

Round or oval frames, rimless or thin metal styles and browlines. The detector shows frame ideas next to your result.
