Square face shape: how to recognize and style it

A square face carries its width all the way down to a strong, angular jaw. It photographs with a lot of structure — here is how to confirm it and how to soften or play up those lines.

  • Women 4.8% · men 11.3%
  • Jaw angle ≤ 145°

How do I know if I have a square face shape?

You likely have a square face shape if your jaw is almost as wide as your cheekbones and turns a clear corner below the ears, your forehead is broad too, and the sides of your face run fairly straight from temple to jaw. The chin tends to be wide and flat rather than pointed. FaceTwin’s detector calls a face square when the jaw measures at least 83.3% of the cheekbone width and the jaw angle is 145° or sharper — as long as the face isn’t long enough (1.53× its width or more) to count as oblong first. In our reference set of 1,196 faces, 8.4% were square: 11.3% of men and 4.8% of women. A square face doesn’t have to be short; what matters is the wide, angular lower face.

  • Jaw ≥ 83.3% of cheekbone width
  • Jaw angle 145° or sharper

  • Most confused with round and oblong

How to tell if your face is square

The giveaway is the lower face. Run a finger along your jaw from below the ear toward the chin: on a square face it turns a noticeable corner and then runs almost horizontally, rather than sweeping in a curve.

  • Jaw width: close to the width of the cheekbones — the face hardly narrows on the way down.
  • Jaw angle: firm and visible. Our median face has a jaw angle of 146°; a square face is at 145° or sharper, and many are below 141°, which we call defined.
  • Forehead: broad, often with a fairly straight hairline.
  • Chin: wide and flat-bottomed rather than pointed.
  • Length: anywhere from short to medium. If it is clearly long as well, you may be looking at oblong.

The detector’s square rule, explained

FaceTwin checks oblong first, because a very long face is the most obvious pattern. Square comes second, and it needs two things at once:

  1. Jaw ÷ cheekbone width of 0.833 or more — the jaw is at least about five-sixths as wide as the cheeks.
  2. A jaw angle of 145° or less — the corner is firm, not rounded.

If the jaw is that wide but the angle is softer, the face falls through to the round check instead. That makes the jaw angle on your result card the most useful number on this page: a face at 144° and one at 147° can look similar, but they land on different sides of the square/round line. Lighting matters here too — soft front light can hide a jaw corner that side light reveals.

How common is a square face?

In our reference set of 1,196 faces, 8.4% were square. It was more than twice as common among men (11.3%) as among women (4.8%). Square faces also often show the triangle tendency, where the jaw is at least 6% wider than the brow line — our detector reports those faces under their nearest main shape, which is frequently square.

Shapes a square face is mistaken for

Mistaken forThe difference
RoundSame width, but a round jaw curves; a square jaw has a corner (145° or sharper).
Oblong (rectangle)Oblong has the straight sides of a square but is clearly long — 1.53× its width or more.
TriangleTriangle is wider at the jaw than the forehead; a square keeps the forehead about as broad as the jaw.
OvalAn oval jaw is narrower than the cheekbones and softly curved.

Hairstyles, glasses and grooming for a square face

A square face has built-in structure. Styling usually either softens the corners a little or leans into them on purpose — both are valid choices.

Hairstyles

  • Soft waves or curls: rounded texture eases the angles while letting the jaw line show.
  • A side-swept fringe: a diagonal line breaks up the horizontals of the forehead and jaw.
  • Layers that start around the cheekbones: they move the eye upward and frame the face.
  • For short hair, a textured crop or a slightly longer top with tapered sides keeps the look relaxed; a very blunt, jaw-length bob draws a straight line right at the widest point.

Glasses frames

Curves contrast with angles: round and oval frames soften a strong jaw, rimless or thin metal frames keep the look light, and a browline frame puts visual weight at the top to balance the bottom. Heavy, sharply square frames repeat the jaw line — great if you want a bold look, less so if you want balance.

Makeup, contour and beards

If you contour, a little shade on the outer corners of the jaw and the temples rounds the outline, with blush placed on the apples of the cheeks to add softness. For beards, a square face can carry most styles; rounded or slightly tapered beards soften it, while a sharply edged, squared beard exaggerates the angles. Many people with a square jaw simply keep it clean-shaven or in short stubble to show it off.

Celebrities often cited as square-faced

Angelina Jolie, Olivia Wilde and Brad Pitt are often cited as examples of a square face shape. We have not measured them; style writers disagree on many famous faces, and a jaw that looks square in one photo may look softer in another.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a face square instead of round?

The jaw corner. Both have a wide lower face, but a square face has a jaw angle of 145° or sharper, while a round face curves more softly into the chin.

Is a square face shape masculine?

Not inherently. It is more common among men in our data (11.3% vs 4.8%), but many women have square faces, and the shape says nothing about femininity or masculinity.

What is the best haircut for a square face?

Cuts with texture or diagonal lines — soft waves, side-swept fringes, layers from the cheekbones — soften the corners. A slick, structured cut can play up the angles if that’s the look you want.

What glasses suit a square face?

Round, oval, rimless and browline frames tend to balance a square face. Very angular, heavy frames repeat the jaw line.

Can a square face be long?

A little. If the face reaches 1.53 times its width, the detector calls it oblong first — that’s essentially a long square, often called a rectangle face.

Can makeup change a square face?

It can soften how the corners read in photos, mainly by shading the outer jaw and temples. It doesn’t change the shape, and it doesn’t need to.
