Diamond face shape: the rarest shape, explained

A diamond face peaks at the cheekbones and narrows both above and below. It’s the rarest of the main shapes in our data — here’s how to confirm it and how to frame those cheekbones.

  • 3.8% of faces (rarest)
  • Women 1.1% · men 6.2%
  • Cheekbones widest
  • Narrow brow and jaw

How do I know if I have a diamond face shape?

You likely have a diamond face shape if your cheekbones are clearly the widest part of your face and both your forehead and your jaw are noticeably narrower, so the outline comes to a soft point at the top and the bottom. The cheekbones are usually high and prominent, the temples look narrower than the cheeks, and the chin is often slim or slightly pointed. FaceTwin’s detector calls a face diamond when the brow line is no more than about 80% of the cheekbone width (0.797) and the jaw is no more than about 82% (0.822), once the longer and wider-jawed shapes have been ruled out. It is the rarest shape in our reference set of 1,196 faces — 3.8% overall, 6.2% of men and only 1.1% of women.

  • Brow ≤ ~80% of cheekbone width
  • Jaw ≤ ~82% of cheekbone width
  • 3.8% of faces (men 6.2%, women 1.1%)
  • Most confused with heart and oval

How to tell if your face is diamond shaped

Picture a diamond with its corners rounded off: one wide point in the middle, tapering above and below. The key is that both ends narrow, not just one.

  • Cheekbones: high, prominent and clearly the widest line across the face.
  • Forehead: narrower than the cheeks — the temples can look slightly hollow by comparison.
  • Jaw: also narrower, with a slim or pointed chin.
  • Length: usually medium to long; a diamond face rarely looks short.

A useful home check is to place your fingertips on your temples, then on your cheekbones, then on your jaw corners. On a diamond face your hands move noticeably outward at the cheeks and back inward at both other points.

The detector’s diamond rule in plain words

Diamond is the last specific shape FaceTwin checks before falling back to oval, so a face has to pass the oblong, square, round and heart tests first. Then it needs both of these:

  1. Brow ÷ cheekbone width of 0.797 or less — the brow line is under about four-fifths of the cheek width.
  2. Jaw ÷ cheekbone width of 0.822 or less — the jaw has narrowed as well.

Because the brow measurement is what separates diamond from heart and oval, eyebrow shape and grooming can nudge a borderline result: brows that end early or are hidden by hair shorten the measured brow line. Pull hair back, keep a neutral expression and check the brow ratio on your result card.

How rare is a diamond face?

Diamond was the rarest result in our reference set of 1,196 faces at 3.8% — fewer than one face in twenty-five. It was more common among the 646 men (6.2%) than the 540 women (1.1%). The rarity makes sense: it requires two independent narrowings at once, above and below the cheeks. Many people who read that they have “high cheekbones” are actually ovals with strong cheekbones rather than true diamonds.

Hairstyles, glasses and grooming for a diamond face

The cheekbones are the feature here, so the usual goal is to add a little width at the forehead and jaw while keeping the cheekbones visible.

Hairstyles

  • A soft, textured fringe: it fills out the narrower forehead.
  • Chin-length cuts with volume: they add width around a slim jaw.
  • Tucked-behind-the-ear styles: they open up the cheekbones instead of covering them.
  • For short hair, a little fullness at the sides above the ears balances the temples; very tight sides with a tall top can make the forehead look narrower.

Glasses frames

Oval and rimless frames soften the angles without hiding the cheekbones, cat-eye frames echo and highlight them, and browline frames add width at the top. Narrow frames that sit right at cheekbone level can make that line look even wider.

Makeup, contour and beards

Diamond faces usually need little contour under the cheekbones, since the structure is already there. A touch of highlight at the temples and the center of the forehead, with blush on the apples rather than high on the bones, brings balance. For beards, a fuller beard along the jaw and chin adds width below the cheeks; keeping the cheek line trimmed avoids adding more width there.

Celebrities often cited as diamond-faced

Jennifer Lopez, Robert Pattinson and Johnny Depp are often cited as examples of a diamond face shape. We haven’t measured these faces, and the diamond label is one of the most debated — the same celebrity often appears as oval or heart elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Is a diamond face shape rare?

Yes — it was the rarest shape in our reference set of 1,196 faces at 3.8%, and only 1.1% of the women.

What is the difference between a diamond and a heart face?

The forehead. A heart face is nearly as wide at the brow as at the cheeks; a diamond face is clearly narrower at the brow, as well as at the jaw.

Do high cheekbones mean I have a diamond face?

Not on their own. You also need a narrower forehead and jaw. Many people with prominent cheekbones are ovals.

What haircut suits a diamond face shape?

Styles that add width at the forehead and jaw — a soft fringe, chin-length volume — while leaving the cheekbones visible.

What glasses suit a diamond face?

Oval, rimless, cat-eye and browline frames. They soften the angles or add width at the brow.

Why do some sites call it an “ideal” face?

Prominent cheekbones are often praised in style writing, but no shape is better than another. It’s a description for styling, and any score is entertainment, not worth.
