How do I know if I have a triangle face shape?
You may have a triangle face shape — also called pear-shaped — if your jaw is the widest part of your face and your forehead is noticeably narrower, so the outline widens as it goes down. The jaw is usually strong and full, the cheekbones sit between the two widths, and the temples can look narrow. We count a face as having a triangle tendency when the jaw is at least 6% wider than the brow line. To be honest about our tool: the FaceTwin detector has no triangle class. It reports these faces as their nearest main shape, often square or round, but it shows both ratios you need. Divide the jaw ÷ cheek number by the brow ÷ cheek number; 1.06 or more means a triangle tendency. In our reference set of 1,196 faces that was 9.9% — 16.4% of men and 2% of women.

How to tell if your face is triangle shaped
A triangle face is the mirror image of a heart face. Instead of a broad top tapering to the chin, the width builds toward the bottom.
- Jaw: the widest line, often with full, well-defined corners.
- Forehead: narrower than the jaw — sometimes clearly so at the temples.
- Cheekbones: in between, so the sides of the face slope outward on the way down.
- Chin: often broad rather than pointed.
To check with a mirror, measure across your brow line (between the outer ends of your eyebrows) and across your jaw corners. If the jaw measurement is about 6% larger or more — roughly 6 mm more on a 100 mm brow line — you have the triangle pattern we use.
Why our detector doesn’t say “triangle” — and how to check anyway
FaceTwin’s detector chooses between six shapes: oblong, square, round, heart, diamond and oval. Triangle isn’t one of them, because a wide jaw already pushes most of these faces into the square or round checks, and a separate class would overlap heavily with both. Rather than hide that, we show the numbers so you can see the triangle pattern yourself.
- Run the detector above on a straight-on photo with your hair pulled back.
- Find the jaw ÷ cheek ratio and the brow ÷ cheek ratio on the result card.
- Divide the first by the second. For example, a jaw ratio of 0.86 and a brow ratio of 0.80 gives 1.075.
- If the result is 1.06 or higher, your jaw is at least 6% wider than your brow line — a triangle tendency. Your reported shape tells you its nearest neighbor.
Keep in mind that the 68-point model can’t see the hairline, so the brow width comes from the outer ends of your eyebrows. Brows that are trimmed short or hidden under hair can make the brow line look narrower than your forehead really is.
How common is a triangle face?
In our reference set of 1,196 faces, 9.9% had a jaw at least 6% wider than the brow line. The gender split was one of the largest in our data: 16.4% of the 646 men, but only 2% of the 540 women. These faces are also counted under their main shape, so the 9.9% overlaps with the six main results rather than adding to them — many of them are round or square faces with a narrower forehead.

Styling aims to add width at the top of the head and the temples, so the forehead and jaw read more evenly.
Hairstyles
- Volume at the crown and temples: layers, a bit of lift at the roots or a textured top widens the upper face.
- A side-swept or textured fringe: it adds width across the forehead without covering the eyes.
- Length that ends below the jaw or well above it: cuts that stop exactly at the jaw line draw a horizontal line at the widest point.
- For short hair, slightly fuller sides and top with a tapered neckline work better than very tight sides.
Glasses frames
Frames with weight at the top — browline styles, cat-eyes, or frames with a strong upper rim — add width to the upper face. Frames slightly wider than the brow line help too. Bottom-heavy frames repeat the wide-jaw pattern.
Makeup, contour and beards
If you contour, soft shade along the outer jaw and highlight at the temples and center of the forehead even out the outline. For beards — relevant for many, since the pattern is most common in men in our data — keep the sides trimmed close and let a little length sit at the chin, or go with short stubble; a full, wide beard along the jaw adds even more width at the bottom.
Celebrities often cited as triangle-faced
Minnie Driver and Kelly Osbourne are often cited as examples of a triangle or pear face shape. We have not measured them, and because triangle is the least standardized of the shapes, style guides disagree more here than anywhere else.
