A heart shaped face is broad across the brow and cheekbones and narrows to a smaller chin. It’s the second most common shape among women in our data — here’s how to confirm it.

  • 8.9% of faces
  • Women 16.1% · men 2.8%
  • Wide brow, narrow chin
  • Checked by brow + jaw ratios

How do I know if I have a heart shaped face?

You probably have a heart shaped face if your forehead is nearly as wide as your cheekbones, and your face then narrows noticeably to a smaller, often slightly pointed chin. The jaw corners sit in from the cheeks, the cheekbones are prominent, and some heart faces have a widow’s peak at the hairline, though that isn’t required. FaceTwin’s detector calls a face heart shaped when the brow line measures at least 83% of the cheekbone width and the jaw is no more than 82% of it — so the top stays wide while the bottom tapers. Long faces are classed as oblong first, and wide, angular jaws as square. In our reference set of 1,196 faces, 8.9% were heart shaped, with a striking gender split: 16.1% of women but just 2.8% of men.

  • Brow ≥ 83% of cheekbone width
  • Jaw ≤ 82% of cheekbone width
  • 8.9% of faces (women 16.1%, men 2.8%)
  • Most confused with diamond and oval

How to tell if you have a heart shaped face

The pattern is an upside-down triangle with curved sides: broad at the top, slender at the bottom. Look for the contrast between the width of your forehead and the width of your chin.

  • Forehead: wide — almost as wide as the cheekbones when measured between the outer ends of the brows.
  • Cheekbones: high and often the widest point, but only a little wider than the forehead.
  • Jaw: narrower, with corners that sit well inside the line of the cheeks.
  • Chin: smaller and often slightly pointed.
  • Hairline: sometimes a widow’s peak, which strengthens the heart impression, but many heart faces have a straight hairline.

What the detector measures for a heart face

Our detector reads three ratios against the cheekbone width. For a heart result, two of them must line up after the oblong, square and round checks have been passed:

  1. Brow ÷ cheekbone width of 0.83 or more — the brow line keeps at least 83% of the cheek width.
  2. Jaw ÷ cheekbone width of 0.82 or less — the jaw has clearly narrowed.

The brow measurement is what separates heart from diamond. Both have a narrow jaw, but a diamond face also narrows at the top (brow under about 80% of the cheeks), while a heart face stays wide there. Because the 68-point landmark model can’t see your hairline, forehead height is estimated — the detector knows how wide your brow line is, but not how high your forehead goes. Pull fringes back for the photo so the brows are clearly visible.

How common is a heart shaped face?

Heart faces were 8.9% of our reference set of 1,196 faces overall, but that average hides a big difference. Among the 540 women, heart was the second most common shape after oval at 16.1% — roughly one woman in six. Among the 646 men it was 2.8%, one of the rarest results. Men in our set more often had wider lower faces, which pulls them toward round, square or a triangle tendency instead.

Heart vs diamond vs oval

ShapeBrow lineCheekbonesJaw and chin
HeartWide (≥ 83% of cheeks)Widest, but only slightlyNarrow, smaller chin
DiamondNarrow (≤ ~80% of cheeks)Clearly the widest pointNarrow, often pointed
OvalA little narrower than cheeksWidestGently narrower, rounded chin

If your result flips between heart and oval, your jaw is close to the 82% boundary; if it flips between heart and diamond, look at the brow ratio.

Hairstyles, glasses and grooming for a heart shaped face

The idea is to add a little visual weight around the jaw and keep the brow from looking wider than it is — so the outline feels balanced from top to bottom.

Hairstyles

  • A chin-length or lob cut: it puts width right where the face is narrowest.
  • A side-swept or curtain fringe: it covers part of the forehead at an angle and frames the eyes.
  • Waves or curls from the mid-lengths down: fullness at the bottom balances the top.
  • For short hair, keep some length and texture at the sides rather than a very high, voluminous top, which adds weight to the widest part of the face.

Glasses frames

Bottom-heavy frames and aviators add width toward the jaw, light rimless frames avoid adding weight at the brow, and soft oval frames follow the taper of the face. Very wide, heavy top bars or decorated upper rims make the forehead read wider.

Makeup, contour and beards

Contour, if used, goes lightly at the temples and the sides of the forehead, with highlight on the chin and blush placed slightly lower on the cheeks to bring attention down. For the smaller number of men with a heart shaped face, a fuller beard at the chin and jaw — a short full beard or a rounded chin beard — adds the width the lower face lacks.

Celebrities often cited as heart-faced

Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Gosling are often cited as examples of a heart shaped face. We haven’t measured these faces, and it’s common to see the same celebrity labeled heart in one article and diamond or oval in another.

Frequently asked questions

Is a heart shaped face rare?

Not among women: 16.1% of the women in our reference set had one, the second most common shape. It is rare among men, at 2.8%.

Do you need a widow’s peak to have a heart shaped face?

No. A widow’s peak can emphasize the shape, but the defining features are a wide brow line and a narrower jaw and chin.

What is the difference between a heart and a diamond face?

The forehead. Both narrow at the jaw, but a heart face stays wide at the brow (83%+ of the cheekbones) while a diamond face narrows there too.

What hairstyles should I avoid with a heart shaped face?

Lots of volume at the crown and temples combined with very short, sleek sides tends to exaggerate the wide top. Some fullness near the chin balances it.

What glasses suit a heart shaped face?

Bottom-heavy frames, aviators, rimless styles and soft ovals. They add width low down or stay light at the brow.

Can men have a heart shaped face?

Yes, though it was uncommon in our data (2.8% of men). A beard that adds fullness at the chin is a common way to balance it.
