How do I know if I have an oblong face shape?

You likely have an oblong face shape if your face is noticeably longer than it is wide, and your forehead, cheekbones and jaw are all fairly similar in width, so the sides of the face run almost straight up and down. The chin can be rounded or squared, and there is often a long distance from the mouth to the chin or from the brows to the hairline. FaceTwin’s detector checks length first: if your face measures 1.53 times its cheekbone width or more, it is called oblong regardless of the other ratios. For comparison, the median face in our reference set of 1,196 faces is 1.449 times as long as wide. Oblong was the second most common shape at 16.5%, and more frequent in women (22%) than men (11.6%).

How to tell if your face is oblong

An oblong face is easiest to recognize in the vertical direction. Before judging width, look at how much face there is from top to bottom.

  • Length: clearly greater than width — about 1.53 times the cheekbone width or more, against a typical 1.45.
  • Even widths: the forehead, cheekbones and jaw are close to one another, so the outline looks more like a tall rectangle than an egg.
  • Straight sides: the cheeks don’t bulge out much beyond the temples or the jaw.
  • Long lower or upper third: many oblong faces have extra length either in the chin area or the forehead.

If your face is long but tapers clearly toward a rounded chin, you may be a long oval instead — the line between the two is narrow.

Why the detector checks oblong first

Length is the most obvious and most reliable thing a photo can show, so FaceTwin tests it before anything else. If your face length divided by cheekbone width is 1.53 or more, the result is oblong — even if the jaw is wide enough to look square or the brow wide enough to look heart shaped. In those cases you might think of yourself as a long square (rectangle) or a long heart, and borrow a little advice from those pages too.

There’s one caveat. The 68-point landmark model has no point on the hairline, so the top of the face is estimated from your facial proportions. A very high hairline won’t fully count, and a fringe doesn’t hide anything from the detector. Chin-down photos shorten the face, and chin-up photos lengthen it, so hold the camera at eye level.

How common is an oblong face?

Oblong was the second most common shape in our reference set of 1,196 faces, at 16.5%. It was nearly twice as common among women (22%) as men (11.6%), which matches the overall pattern: the median face length ÷ width was 1.47 for women and 1.43 for men. Many oblong results sit just over the 1.53 line, so they share a lot with long oval faces.

Hairstyles, glasses and grooming for an oblong face

Styling for an oblong face does the opposite of what works for a round one: it adds width at the sides and breaks up the vertical lines.

Hairstyles

  • A fringe or bangs: covering part of the forehead visually shortens the face — one of the most effective changes for this shape.
  • Volume at the sides: waves, curls or layers around the cheeks and ears add the width that balances height.
  • Shoulder-length or mid-length cuts: very long, straight hair adds more vertical lines.
  • For short hair, keep the top moderate and leave some fullness at the sides; a tall quiff or high fade stretches the face further.

Glasses frames

Frames with real depth cover more of the face vertically. Oversized square or deep rectangular frames add width, a lower bridge makes the nose and mid-face read shorter, and bold or decorated temples pull the eye to the sides. Narrow, small frames tend to emphasize length.

Makeup, contour and beards

Contour, if used, sits along the hairline at the top of the forehead and just under the chin, which shortens the face visually, with blush applied horizontally across the cheeks. For beards, fuller sides and a shorter chin — a well-filled short beard or mutton chops — add width; a long, pointed beard lengthens the face.

Celebrities often cited as oblong-faced

Sarah Jessica Parker, Liv Tyler and Ben Affleck are often cited as examples of an oblong (long) face shape. We have not measured them; treat them as common reference points rather than measured facts.

Frequently asked questions

Is an oblong face the same as a long face or a rectangle face?

Essentially yes. Long, oblong and rectangle all describe a face clearly longer than it is wide; rectangle usually implies a squarer jaw.

What ratio makes a face oblong?

In FaceTwin’s detector, a face length of 1.53 times the cheekbone width or more. The median in our reference set is 1.449.

Is an oblong face common?

Yes — it’s the second most common shape in our data at 16.5%, and 22% of the women we measured.

What is the best haircut for an oblong face?

A fringe and some width at the sides. Mid-length cuts with waves or layers around the cheeks shorten and widen the outline.

What glasses make a long face look shorter?

Deep, oversized frames, a low bridge and bold temples. They cover more vertical space and add width.

Why does the detector say oblong when my face looks oval?

Your length ratio is at or just above 1.53. A slightly raised chin or a close camera can push a long oval over; try a photo at eye level from further away.
